Publish and Share on Mac

Outerline can turn a document in your library into a public web page with a link you can share. The published page preserves your Markdown formatting, and every time you save the document Outerline updates the page behind the same link.

Anyone with the link can view a published document. Outerline asks search engines not to index shared pages, but the link is public access, not a password or private invitation.

Add Your Account

Publishing requires an Outerline account.

  1. Open Outerline > Settings.
  2. Select Account.
  3. Choose Add Account.
  4. Sign in, create an account, or use Sign in with Apple.

Signing in by email sends a six-digit code to that address. Enter the code in Outerline, or click the secure link in the same email. Codes expire after 15 minutes, and requesting a new one replaces the previous code.

The whole flow happens inside the app. You are not handed off to a browser to sign in.

Subscribe to Outerline Publish

Publishing new documents requires an active Outerline Publish subscription in addition to your account. The first time you publish, Outerline shows the subscription details for review before anything is purchased.

  • The subscription is billed through your Apple Account and auto-renews monthly until cancelled.
  • Manage or cancel it anytime in App Store > Account > Subscriptions (or Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions on iPhone).
  • If you already subscribed on another device, choose Restore Purchases on the subscription sheet.
  • Links you’ve already shared stay live if your subscription ends, and you can copy links or stop sharing at any time, with or without a subscription.

See the Terms of Service for full subscription and billing terms.

Publish a Document

Open Publish... from any of these places:

  • Right-click a document in the Library.
  • Right-click a document in Starred.
  • Open the editor’s Publish/Export menu.
  1. Choose Publish....
  2. In Share Link to Document, pick an Appearance for the page: Sans, Serif, or Mono. Sans is the default.
  3. Select Anyone with link.
  4. Choose Share Link and wait while Outerline creates the public page.
  5. Choose Copy Link, then send the link wherever you like.
  6. Close the sheet.

Appearance sets how the published page is typeset for readers; it does not change the editor or the Markdown on disk. You can change it later from the same sheet, and a live page updates right away.

Only saved documents in your active library can be published. Drafts and documents opened from outside the library must be saved into the library first.

Keep the Shared Page Updated

After a document is published, successful saves update the existing shared page automatically. The public URL stays the same, so you do not need to send a new link after every edit.

Copy or Stop Sharing

Open Publish... again for a published document. Choose Copy Link to copy its current URL, or select Only you have access to make the public page unavailable. Stopping sharing does not delete the document from your Outerline library, and republishing later reuses the same link.

Manage Published Documents

Open Outerline > Settings > Account and choose Manage Account. Your browser opens your account settings, where you can review published documents and stop sharing individual pages.

What Readers Can Do

A shared page can be read in any modern browser. Readers can copy the Markdown or choose Open in Outerline to import a snapshot into their own library. An imported copy does not stay connected to future updates from the publisher.

Publishing on iPhone

See Publish and Share on iPhone for the iPhone document menu, access controls, and account-management flow.
