Files & Settings on iPhone

Outerline stores markdown documents as files in your chosen library. The iPhone app includes file actions for moving, duplicating, exporting, backing up, and recovering documents.

Move Documents

Use Move from a document row or the editor actions menu to choose another folder in your library. If a document with the same name already exists at the destination, Outerline creates a unique filename.

Duplicate Documents

Duplicate creates a copy beside the current document, opens the duplicate, and prompts you to rename it. The duplicate gets its own document identity, while the markdown content is copied from the original.

Export a Document

Use Export as to save a document through the iOS Files export picker. Supported export formats include HTML, PDF, and Markdown.

Export a Library Backup

Library Settings includes Export Library Backup. This creates a timestamped outerline-backup-*.zip archive containing the library and Outerline metadata.

If the library is cloud-backed, Outerline requests missing markdown files and required metadata before creating the backup. You should not need to open Files and manually download every item first.

Change Library Location

Use Library Location settings when you need to switch to another library folder. Choose the same folder used by your Mac if you want both apps to work from one shared markdown library.

Recently Deleted

Delete moves documents to Recently Deleted instead of removing them immediately. The Recently Deleted row appears in the Documents section when there are deleted documents.

  • Open Recently Deleted to browse deleted documents.
  • Tap a deleted document to view its markdown source in read-only mode.
  • Use Move to restore a document to a folder.
  • Use Delete to permanently remove a document and its related metadata.
  • Outerline uses the shared retention setting, which defaults to 30 days. You can also choose 5 days, 15 days, or never.
