Terms of Service

Effective date: July 8, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Outerline ("Outerline", "we", "us"), operated by Adam Goehrig-Bawany. They cover the Outerline apps for Mac and iPhone, the outerline.so website, and Outerline accounts and the publishing service (together, the "Service").

By using the app, or by creating an Outerline account, you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

You must be at least 13 years old to create an Outerline account.

Using the App

Outerline is a local-first markdown editor. Your documents are files on your own device, and they belong to you. Nothing in these terms gives us any rights over documents you keep locally.

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app. You may not copy, modify, resell, or redistribute the app, or use it in any way that violates the law. If you downloaded the app from Apple's App Store, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and Apple is not responsible for the Service or these terms.

The app and the publishing service are currently free. We may introduce paid features in the future; if we do, we will present pricing and any additional terms before you are charged for anything.

Outerline Accounts

You can use Outerline without an account. An account is only required to publish documents through Outerline's sharing service.

When you create an account, you agree to provide accurate information and to keep your email address current. Sign-in is handled through links sent to your email address, so keeping access to that address secure is your responsibility. You are responsible for activity that happens through your account, and you agree to let us know at [email protected] if you believe your account has been compromised.

Publishing & Your Content

You own the documents you publish. When you publish a document, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, reproduce, render, and display it — including its title, description, Markdown content, and revision history — solely as needed to operate the sharing service. This license lasts for as long as the content is hosted on our servers.

Published documents are public to anyone with the link. We ask search engines not to index published pages, but that is not access control: anyone with the link may view the page, copy the Markdown, or import a snapshot into Outerline. Do not publish anything you are not comfortable being public.

If you stop sharing a document, the public link will no longer show it, but as described in the Privacy Policy, we may retain the share record and revision history unless and until we provide a separate deletion process.

You are solely responsible for the content you publish. By publishing, you confirm that you have the rights to the content and that it does not violate these terms or any law.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to publish or transmit content that:

• is illegal, or promotes or facilitates illegal activity;
• infringes anyone's copyright, trademark, or other rights;
• contains malware, phishing, or other malicious code or links;
• is spam, or is published primarily for search-engine or link manipulation;
• harasses, threatens, or violates the privacy of another person.

You also agree not to interfere with the Service itself — for example, by attempting to gain unauthorized access to accounts or servers, circumventing rate limits, or placing unreasonable load on our infrastructure.

We may remove published content, or suspend or terminate accounts, at our discretion if we believe these terms have been violated. Where practical we will tell you why, but we are not obligated to give notice before removing content that we believe is harmful or unlawful.

Copyright Complaints

If you believe content published through Outerline infringes your copyright, email [email protected] with the link to the published page, a description of the copyrighted work, and your contact information. We will review the complaint and remove infringing content where appropriate. We may terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

Termination

You can stop using the Service at any time. You may stop sharing your published documents from within the app, and you may request account deletion by emailing [email protected].

We may suspend or terminate your account or access to the publishing service if you violate these terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. If we discontinue the publishing service as a whole, we will make reasonable efforts to give notice in advance. Because your documents live on your own device, ending your account does not affect your local files.

Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that published links will remain available. Your documents are files on your own device — you are responsible for backing them up.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Outerline will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for loss of data, arising out of or relating to your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of $50 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty disclaimers or liability limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Changes & Governing Law

We may update these terms from time to time. Changes will be posted at this URL with a revised effective date, and material changes affecting account holders will be communicated by email or in the app. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Washington.

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and Outerline regarding the Service.
