Outerline 1.2.8

Summary

macOS

Headings and their sections can now collapse, with arrows that appear as you move the pointer over a heading and new Expand Section and Collapse Section commands. Task lists show interactive checkboxes, and preview displays local images. You can drop image files from Finder into the editor and grant access to images outside your library. Typing after a library refresh no longer triggers false “External change detected” warnings.

iOS

Headings and their sections can now collapse, and collapsed sections are remembered per document. Task lists show interactive checkboxes you can tap, and preview displays local images from your library. Scrolling and editing are smoother in long, Markdown-heavy notes.

macOS

Improvements

  • Collapsible headings and sections. All six heading levels can collapse the section beneath them; a section ends at the next heading of the same or higher level. Move the pointer over a heading to reveal its arrow in the left margin; the heading holding the caret and any collapsed heading keep theirs visible. Expanding a parent preserves its collapsed child sections, and Replace All reveals any collapsed sections it changes. Collapsed sections are remembered per document on this Mac, and folding never changes your Markdown, preview, or exports.
  • Expand Section and Collapse Section. Editor > Expand Section (Command-[) and Collapse Section (Command-]) apply to the section containing the cursor and everything nested in it, leaving other sections as they are. Both work in Editor Only and Split View.
  • Write below a collapsed final section. When the last section is collapsed, a blank line below it lets you click and type or paste at the end of the document without expanding anything. Return at the end of that heading does the same. Undo removes the addition in one step.
  • Interactive checkboxes. Task-list items (- [ ], - [x]) now appear as checkboxes in the editor. Click a box to check or uncheck it as a single undoable edit, without moving the caret. The file stays standard Markdown, and task lines inside fenced code blocks stay literal. On by default; turn off Settings > Editor > Completions > Interactive checkboxes to see the raw brackets. Command-click on a task marker toggles it either way.
  • Local images in preview. Split View and Preview Only now show images stored in your library. A source without a scheme, such as ![Diagram](images/diagram.png), loads from the document’s folder, and a leading / starts at the library root. An image that cannot be loaded shows a placeholder naming its source, and a slow load, such as an iCloud download, shows progress. Remote images load as before, and matched split scrolling accounts for image heights. Published pages show a placeholder in place of each image, because Publish does not upload images.
  • Drop images from Finder. Drag image files from Finder into the editor, including in Split View, to insert Markdown image links where the insertion indicator shows. Multiple files land on separate lines in drop order, and the whole drop is one Undo step. Files are linked in place, never copied: library images get document-relative paths, images elsewhere in your home folder use ~/… paths, and the filename becomes the alt text.
  • Images outside your library. Dropping an external image remembers access to that file. For external images you type by hand, preview shows a Grant access button, also available from the image reference’s context menu in the editor. Choosing the containing folder covers every image in it and refreshes open previews right away. Permissions are remembered on this Mac only and do not carry over to another Mac or to iPhone.
  • Line numbers are quieter: the gutter’s divider is gone, and the numbers use softer contrast.
  • Updated web-page extraction to Defuddle 0.19.5.
  • Removed the selected version’s timestamp from the Version History footer, where it repeated the date and time already shown on the selected row.

Fixes

  • Fixed false “External change detected” warnings after a library refresh followed by more typing. Outerline now compares the file against what the editor last saved, not a snapshot that may hold unsaved text; real changes from other apps and devices still pause saving until you resolve them.
  • Fixed a note that saved successfully being treated as unsaved when its file date could not be read afterward, which could create a duplicate of a new draft on retry.
  • Fixed formatting controls lighting up for surrounding content when the caret is in a heading. Only the heading level is highlighted now; selecting text detects formatting as usual.
  • Fixed pasting a URL over a selection inside an existing link or image nesting a second link. Filling the url placeholder of an inserted image, or of a link after Command-K, is now a plain paste.
  • Fixed one failed remote image in preview removing the other images in its paragraph. A failed inline image now shows a photo glyph in its place.

iOS

Improvements

  • Collapsible headings and sections. All six heading levels can collapse the section beneath them; a section ends at the next heading of the same or higher level. Place the caret on a heading to show its arrow in the left margin, then tap it to collapse; collapsed headings keep theirs visible. Expanding a parent preserves its collapsed child sections. Find and navigation reveal hidden destinations, and Copy and Select All still include the full text. Collapsed sections are remembered per document on this iPhone; they do not sync, and folding never changes your Markdown, preview, or exports.
  • Write below a collapsed final section. When the last section is collapsed, a blank line below it lets you tap and type or paste at the end of the document without expanding anything. Return at the end of that heading does the same.
  • Interactive checkboxes. Task-list items (- [ ], - [x]) now appear as checkboxes in the editor. Tap a box, or the dash before it, to check or uncheck it with a light haptic; the tap does not move the caret or raise the keyboard, and tapping the item’s text places the caret as usual. Undo and Redo flip the box and leave the caret where it is. The file stays standard Markdown, and task lines inside fenced code blocks stay literal. On by default; turn off Settings > Editor > Completions > Interactive Checkboxes to see the raw brackets.
  • Local images in preview. The editor’s Preview and Library preview now show images stored in your library. A source without a scheme, such as ![Diagram](images/diagram.png), loads from the document’s folder, and a leading / starts at the library root. An image that cannot be loaded shows a placeholder naming its source, and an image still in iCloud downloads before it appears, with progress shown if that takes a moment. Large images are decoded at display size to use less memory. Published pages show a placeholder in place of each image, because Publish does not upload images.
  • Smoother long notes. Scrolling and editing do less repeated work in long, Markdown-heavy notes, including when scrolling past checkboxes and highlighted Markdown.
  • Updated web-page extraction to Defuddle 0.19.5.

  • Fixed pasting a URL over a selection inside an existing link or image nesting a second link when Paste URL to Create Link is on. Filling the url placeholder of an inserted image is now a plain paste.
