Outerline 1.2.5
Summary
macOS
Your notes stay consistent and your edits stay safe across devices. A note keeps one identity everywhere, so links, stars, comments, and version history keep working when two devices disagree. Open notes follow edits and moves made elsewhere, and when a note changes while you’re editing it, Outerline asks what to keep instead of overwriting either version. Quitting or closing a window now saves your last edits to the file. The Library pane title stays with the folder you’re browsing, and MCP agents get clear errors instead of silent timeouts.
iOS
New Document opens a typing-ready editor instantly. Notes from your other devices download on their own, open notes reload when a newer version arrives, and a note keeps one identity across devices. When a note changes while you’re editing it, Outerline asks what to keep, and unsaved edits stay recoverable. Tag renames and deletes no longer fail partway, and the Getting Started tour is refreshed.
macOS
Improvements
- Made each note keep one identity across devices. If two devices gave the same note different identities, they now agree on one. Links, Siri and Shortcuts, and MCP tools that use the old identity still open the note, and its stars, comments, highlights, custom title, published link, and version history carry over.
- Added a choice when a note changes on disk while you have unsaved edits: Use Disk Version, Keep My Edits, Keep Both, or Decide Later. Outerline checks the note again before applying your choice. Keep Both saves your text as a new note beside the original.
- Added View > Recovered Edits…. Unresolved or unsaved edits are kept outside your library until you decide, with a preview, Save as New Note, Markdown export, and Discard. Recovered Edits opens at launch only when something still needs recovering.
- Made quitting and closing a document window save your last edits to the note. Recovered Edits is used only when a save isn’t safe, fails, or takes too long.
- Made open notes follow changes from your other devices and from agents, including after Outerline returns from the background. Moving or renaming a note, or its folder, keeps the editor and any unsaved text with the note.
- Made every note and folder change coordinate with iCloud and other apps, so Outerline, its MCP helper, and sync don’t write over each other.
- Made the Library pane title always show the folder or scope you’re browsing, even while a note from elsewhere is open, with a count of the listed notes underneath.
- Made MCP agent writes faster: library refreshes run after a change instead of holding up the next one.
- Added the
repair_tag_metadataMCP tool, which resets damaged tag color data only after explicit confirmation. It backs up the original first and leaves notes unchanged. - Refreshed the Getting Started notes to cover library switching, Spotlight and Shortcuts, backups, and Recovered Edits.
Fixes
- Fixed a save from an out-of-date copy of a note replacing a newer version on disk, or recreating a note that had been moved or deleted.
- Fixed a note that was briefly missing, for example while syncing, being treated as deleted. Its unsaved edits are kept.
- Fixed a “Document unavailable” banner appearing after moving a note on this Mac.
- Fixed quitting Outerline leaving its MCP connection behind. Agents now report that Outerline isn’t running, and reconnect when you open it again.
- Fixed MCP requests timing out silently when Outerline was busy. A request the agent has given up on now fails with a clear error and is never applied later.
- Fixed MCP tag renames and deletes changing notes before discovering damaged tag color data. They now check first and stop before anything changes.
- Fixed the MCP helper and the app erasing each other’s stars and tag color changes.
iOS
Improvements
- Made New Document open a typing-ready editor instantly from the Library, a folder’s menu, or the editor’s compose button, while the file is created in the background. If creation fails, your text stays in the editor and each save tries again.
- Made each note keep one identity across devices. Links, Siri and Shortcuts, stars, comments, highlights, custom titles, published links, and version history carry over when two devices disagree. A note briefly missing from a file listing keeps its identity when it reappears.
- Added a choice when a note changes on disk while you have unsaved edits: Use Disk Version, Keep My Edits, Keep Both, or Decide Later.
- Added Recovered Edits, which appears when unresolved or unsaved edits need your attention, with a preview, Save as New Note, Markdown export, and Discard.
- Made notes that arrive from your other devices, including duplicates, download on their own, with titles and previews filling in without opening them.
- Made an open note reload when a newer version arrives or finishes downloading, without interrupting text you’re composing.
- Made every note and folder change coordinate with iCloud and other apps, so edits from different places don’t write over each other.
- Refreshed the Getting Started tour to cover touch editing, highlights and comments, library switching, Spotlight and Shortcuts, backups, and Recently Deleted.
