Outerline 1.2.4

Summary

macOS

Keep several libraries close at hand and switch between them from Settings, with your edits saved and each library’s working context restored when you return. MCP agents can now work with libraries in your own folders while Outerline is open. Siri opens notes in Outerline, and the Search Documents shortcut goes straight to Advanced Search. This release also improves web-page imports, sidebar drop feedback, document windows, comment shortcuts, and Date Modified sorting.

iOS

The new Manage Library screen remembers your libraries and lets you switch safely without returning to setup. Cloud libraries open and sync more quickly, with document titles filling in as files arrive. Launching and scrolling large libraries are smoother, duplicated notes appear immediately, and permanent deletion gives faster feedback. Siri opens notes in Outerline, and Search Documents takes you to the Library search field with your term ready to use.

macOS

Improvements

  • Added remembered libraries in Settings > General > Library. Choose a library from the dropdown, rename it, add an existing Markdown folder, or create a new library with the Basics notes. New libraries take their folder’s name; existing library names stay unchanged.
  • Added safe library switching. Outerline asks before switching, saves the main editor and separate document windows, and restores the destination library’s selected folder, note, and expanded folders. Conflicting unsaved edits, a failed save, or an unavailable destination stop the switch and keep your current library open.
  • Added Manage Libraries… with locations, availability, and recovery actions. The current library appears first with a blue check. Use Retry or Locate… for a missing library, or Remove to forget it on this Mac without deleting its files. Libraries switch in place; Settings no longer offers to move a library into iCloud.
  • Added MCP support for libraries stored in your own folders in the App Store app. Agents can read, search, edit, organize, tag, comment on, and restore notes while Outerline is open with that library selected. Changes appear immediately, requests follow library switches, and overlapping changes are applied one at a time. If Outerline is closed, local-library tools ask you to open it without changing any files.
  • Added Help > Advanced > Install Agent Skill, which opens the Outerline agent skill. Existing MCP connections keep working; restart or reconnect your MCP client after updating to pick up the new helper.
  • Made Search Documents open Advanced Search with your term filled in. Leave the term empty to open search ready to type.
  • Made Spotlight indexing remember its progress, recover after interruptions, and avoid rewriting an unchanged library at launch. Switching libraries removes the previous library’s index; returning to it rebuilds its entries.
  • Made Spotlight indexing skip iCloud bodies that are not downloaded, including notes evicted by Optimize Storage. Their titles remain discoverable, and previously indexed bodies are retained. Body search for cloud-only notes depends on text already indexed on this device.
  • Updated web-page extraction to Defuddle 0.19.4 and improved imported Markdown link and image sanitization while preserving literal content inside code blocks.
  • Made sidebar folders highlight only for supported drops. Text, web links, non-Markdown files, mixed Finder selections, and impossible folder moves no longer appear as accepted drop targets.

Fixes

  • Fixed Siri treating notes as files it could not open. Requests to open a note now route to Outerline.
  • Prevented stale or unsaved body text from being donated to Spotlight when a saved file cannot be read. Incomplete cloud listings and reused filenames no longer cause retained searchable bodies to be deleted.
  • Fixed accepting the disk version during conflict resolution giving a document the current time. Date Modified sorting now uses its filesystem date, or the last known date if metadata is temporarily unavailable.
  • Fixed stale Advanced Search results remaining available while a replacement search runs. Changing the query clears the previous results and shows progress.
  • Made Open in New Window preserve the Title Display preference and prepare the requested document before the window appears, without repeatedly retrying failed opens.
  • Made comment shortcuts consistent: Return and Command+Return submit, Shift+Return inserts a newline, and other modifier combinations remain available to the text editor.
  • Fixed a crash when an MCP agent disconnects before a response finishes. Stalled requests now time out with an uncertain-outcome message instead of waiting indefinitely, and are not retried automatically. Version restores also validate stored paths before reading or writing.
  • Added a clear error when the library changes before a drop onto the Documents heading completes.

iOS

Improvements

  • Added Settings > Library > Manage Library, with Current, Other, and Unavailable libraries, readable locations, and actions to add or create a library. Libraries are remembered on this device; removing one from the list leaves its files untouched.
  • Added safe library switching with confirmation, saving of the open note, and a cancellable opening screen. Cloud libraries open while their files download in the background. Switching back restores the selected folder and expanded folders, and a failed switch keeps you in your current library.
  • Added Retry, Locate…, and Remove for unavailable libraries, with Retry for the iCloud Library. Library folders renamed or moved in Files are followed automatically. New libraries take their folder’s name, and On My iPhone locations use readable paths in setup and Settings.
  • Made iCloud and third-party cloud libraries, including Dropbox, sync more quickly with parallel downloads. Titles fill in as notes arrive, and notes you open keep their download indicator until their content is ready.
  • Reduced work on the main thread during library refreshes and Spotlight indexing for smoother launches and scrolling in large libraries. Background refreshes show evicted notes with a cloud badge so they can download when opened.
  • Made Search Documents open the Library search field with your term filled in, matching names, filenames, and previews. Leave the term empty to open search ready to type.
  • Made Spotlight remember indexed content and recover after interruptions without rewriting an unchanged library on every launch. Indexing skips iCloud bodies that are not on the device and retains previously indexed text. Switching libraries removes the old library’s index; returning rebuilds it.
  • Made duplicated notes appear immediately with their own identity and copied document metadata. Permanent deletion from Recently Deleted also updates the list immediately while file removal continues in the background.
  • Updated web-page extraction to Defuddle 0.19.4, with safer handling of Markdown links and images around fenced code blocks.

Fixes

  • Fixed Siri on iOS 27 presenting notes as unopenable iCloud Drive files. Asking to open a note now opens it in Outerline.
  • Prevented unavailable notes from donating stale or unsaved body text to Spotlight. Retained searchable bodies survive incomplete library listings, registry pruning, and filename reuse.
  • Fixed a background refresh undoing a successful switch after Add Existing Library.
  • Fixed preserving unsaved text after a failed save changing the document’s modification date and moving it incorrectly in Date Modified sorting.
  • Fixed failed duplication leaving stale library rows or identity records behind.
  • Made interrupted or partially failed permanent-delete batches restore unremoved items to Recently Deleted with their metadata intact. Results from an old library no longer update a newly selected library.
