Outerline 1.2.3
Summary
macOS
Choose how documents are named throughout Outerline with the new Title Display preference: use titles derived from your writing or show full filenames, including extensions. Your manual titles still take precedence, and the preference leaves your files untouched. Large libraries are more responsive when switching documents, code-heavy notes open faster, and opening a document in a new window is quicker. Advanced Search uses less memory for dense results and cancels outdated searches as you type. Save new or edited comments with Return or Enter, or use Shift+Return for a new line. File-list rows also resize correctly after a draft’s first save.
iOS
The new Title Display preference brings the same title choice to iPhone. Expanded folders scroll more smoothly in large libraries, and opening a document has a shorter pause before the editor appears. Document and Starred rows now give clear tap feedback, including in dark mode. The link picker also keeps its results visible while searching and handles Return while new results are loading.
macOS
Improvements
- Added Title Display in Settings > General. Choose Automatic for content-derived titles or File Name for full filenames, including extensions. Manual document titles still take precedence. The preference is local to each device and does not change Markdown files, filenames, or saved title metadata.
- Applied the selected title style across document lists, the sidebar, search results, links, inspectors, Recently Deleted, publishing, and editor and window titles.
- Made switching documents more responsive in large libraries by reducing repeated filtering, sorting, row-layout preparation, and context-menu work.
- Reduced the delay before code-heavy documents appear in the editor by making syntax highlighting do less repeated work around fenced code blocks.
- Made Open in New Window faster by reusing the current library state. Text edits, highlights, and comments continue to sync between windows in both directions.
- Reduced Advanced Search memory use for dense results while preserving all matches and accurate highlights. Changing the query cancels outdated searches and prevents older results from replacing the current results.
- Added Return and Enter to save new or edited comments. Use Shift+Return for a new line; the save button and Command+Return remain available.
Fixes
- Fixed file-list rows keeping an incorrect height after an unsaved draft becomes a saved file or its preview changes. Rows now resize while preserving the selected document, editor focus, and cursor position.
- Made name sorting follow the selected title-display preference in the file list and sidebar. File-list search also finds documents by filename.
iOS
Improvements
- Added Title Display to Library settings and the Library options sheet. Choose Automatic or File Name, with manual document titles taking precedence. The choice is local to each device and leaves file contents, filenames, and saved title metadata unchanged.
- Applied the selected title style across Library, Starred, document lists, links, Recently Deleted, and editor navigation. Document sorting follows the displayed names.
- Made scrolling expanded Library folders smoother in large libraries by reducing repeated work while laying out visible rows.
- Reduced the pause between tapping a document and the editor appearing. Opening a note reuses unchanged Library content, and link suggestions are prepared in the background when the link picker opens.
Fixes
- Added immediate visual feedback when tapping Document and Starred rows. The selected fill remains visible through the transition to the editor and clears when returning to the Library. Document icons keep their neutral color, and selection has clearer contrast in dark mode.
- Fixed rows remaining highlighted when a document cannot open yet because it needs to download from iCloud. Selection now clears when the Library stays on screen.
- Fixed Return being ignored while link-picker results were loading. Return now waits for the matching results; further typing or closing the picker cancels that selection. Previous results stay visible while searching, with selection disabled until the new results are ready.
